Canadian Business Travel Group Joins Call to Make Air Travel Security a National Funding Priority
The National Business Travel Association Canada (NBTA Canada), the leading provider of education and professional resources for corporate travel professionals in Canada, today joined the Air Transport Association of Canada (ATAC) in the call to fund air travel security through national funds, rather than overtaxing air passengers with the Air Travellers Security Charge (ATSC).
“Air travel security is national security, and should be funded with general funds,” said NBTA Canada President, Tanya Racz. “Unfortunately, we have seen that threats to air travel pose threats not just to passengers but to all citizens. We urge the Canadian government to stop targeting travellers with the exorbitant Air Travellers Security Charge and instead to use general revenues to protect the nation.”
Recent Department of Finance statements show a surplus of unspent revenues gathered through ATSC of CA$80 million. In light of that surplus, NBTA Canada calls for an immediate reduction of ATSC charges, followed by a total elimination of the charge that unfairly targets travellers.
